I joined Aikido because I was under extreme pressure with challenging difficulties and responsibilities both at home and at work that I never got a break from. This was on top of recent trauma. I wanted something I could do that I enjoyed and that could be my total focus for a couple of hours with no one needing anything from me. I also loved the idea that Aikido teaches not to meet force with force (physical or verbal) but to redirect it. I wanted to hone that skill in myself. I have found that rather dwell on unpleasant thoughts I am able to go over in my mind the different techniques and redirect my thoughts and therefore prevent them from bringing me down. I also find I am less and less bothered by difficult people. While I have found Aikido to be really challenging and at times frustrating in its own right it has been such a blessing to my life. And, I’ve learned some really useful skills if I ever find myself in a physical altercation! — JT
